Brand new sleek openSuse 11.0 for you
Hi guys,
6 more days to go for June 19- The official release date of the much awaited OpenSuse 11.0, And the excitement has been growing like never before. The new release features all the latest packages as well as the much hyped and awaited KDE 4. Check out some cool screenshots and a review of OpenSuse 11.0 beta 2, here.
I recently found this at the Opensuse Forum, while trying to comprehend the meaning of the word GoldMaster edition as mentioned in the roadmap.
Re: Has opensuse 11 Goldmaster come out yet?After I reading, I felt very excited thinking about the great job done by 1000's of people around the world setting up servers, configuring websites and working round the clock to make sure that when we got to their site to get a distro(For FREE), its always a smooth ride, be it Slackware,Suse or Debian or any other great distro for that matter.GM means it's finished, everything is done and it's ready to be sent out. It's related to game development and windows development. So I'll use those. In game development a GM release would be sent to pressing (to create disc's), packaged and sent to stores for the sell date. The same applies to a windows release, BUT they still do testing, and windows can ship with bugs, as long as they are not show stoppers. (not counting Vista)
Same concept applies here, but instead of going to get pressed (even though it will) they right now are preparing documents, getting the repos ready and contacting people so they can host the image. I imagine 10-15 people are getting the torrent file so they can have that ready, and the Opensuse website is getting configured to support 11, instead of 10.3. Bugs are still being worked, but since they aren't system stoppers these will most likely just be patches released close to the release date of 11. So all in all if you installed RC1 (or updated to RC1) and installed all the package updates you should be good to go, in fact my repo's switched over on my PC a couple days ago to use the 11.0 repos. Thats how it normally works. Remember it's going to take 2-3 days to sync all the servers and mirrors with the 11.0 release.

Virus Attack!!
(The virus attack, reminds me of this ^)
Hi guys,
From what I percieve, my XP seems to down due to a pretty nasty virus. I guess, it might have got into my system from one of the usb thumb drives(flash drives )that i use. Anyway the funniest thing(if any) here is that, eventhough i used to open this drive open from linux systems, it was not affected.
As a matter of fact, the virus was not able to touch(change) even a small part of the linux system. And I am posting this post from my Suse system. The problem with XP now is that, as soon as I type the user name and password and try to login, i get immediately logged out.And even during all these crisis times, linux was there for me(all 6 distros, which i had installed in my box). Now i understand the meaning of 'stability'
Since, currently i am busy with my project(to be submitted my next week) at NIIT, i could not dwelve more into the issue. So I decided to reinstall the complete XP system. I have read that if the file -> userinit.exe(winnt/system32) get corrupted, this problem could occur. But I have tried to replace it and so on, but all in vain. So chances are, I would be reinstalling the complete XP system, from scratch, today.
As a matter of fact,there is much uncertainity over the actual cause of the attack, what was attacked and so on. Since I had installed 2 keyloggers, around the same time that I accessed the usb(flash) drive the chance for a nasty malware/spywaree cannot be ruled out. But one thing I can assure you dudes; During the last two times(in the past 1 year), when there were virus attacks, Linux just remained stable. Simply becuase, "exe" files wont run in linux(unless ofcourse, you force it to) and most of the time, i will be in the less previleged user mode, so even if virus some how got into the system, it cannot do much damage.
A "PC world " note
(PC world magazine with all the free goodies)Two days back I bought the latest edition of PC World computer magazine. Since they would be completing 1 year in India, they had lot of free goodies with this month's issue, Including 6 free booklets and a DVD with 12 softwares worth Rs 24,000 (596.12 $) ; FREE.
They also had this neatly published at the back of the cover in which the magazine came(see below) - that they are giving these softwares, costing so much, just free with the magazine. Great!!
But it made me wonder, whether anyone one of us really bother to see the value/cost/effort behind any one the free and open source softwares that we use and those that are taken for granted .....
Consider the softwares that we use daily including the Firefox, GIMP, Thunderbird, OpenOffice and java and thousands other such software;including the Apache, which powers most of the websites(66 million of them- source:netcraft) that you visit. People rarely publicize about the value and power of these softwares.
Imagine one of the computer magazines(substitute your favorite magazine here) decides to give away Vista with their magazine!!(I know its never going to happen!) and consider how much they would advertise, publicize to let everyone "know" that they are giving Vista with their magazine.
Now consider this, imagine how much this same magazine would publicize/advertise if they decide to give out a cool new Linux distribution with their magazine....
I think you get my picture, a stark contrast between the free world of open source /free softwares and that of proprietary software - In my humble opinion, one of the main issues that needs to be addressed.

Happiest day of my life
(The cup of jOy)This day would be added to my small list of 'most happiest days of my life' - becuase of two things
1. I'm selected
Its been a dream for me for the past 2 and half years to be part of a really cool open source project. It all started when I saw an invitation for an open source project in my dear own lug-indore group in Google. I quickly replied to the author stating my interest and also my resume.
Today I waited till 10:00 PM to check my inbox(I can access net from 10PM only) and was overwhelmed to see the reply>> "I WAS SELECTED"
Project details, including the team members and the design will be mailed to me later. And this moment was really a dream come true, considering it was an invitation for projects for the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation-Sarai CSDS programme for short-term FLOSS fellowships
All in all, it was a memorable day.
Suddenly a sense of responsibility came over me and I am planning to take my Java, Linux and Python learning more seriously. Especially get more into swing and awt(java)
2. BroadBand dream comes true
After a long wait of more than 5 long months we decided to give up on our wait for BSNL broadband connection. Although its a really cool connection, all in all, chances I wont be getting in any time soon. So we contacted Asianet and applied for a broad band connection - 24 hours, 128 kbps, and best of all -> no download limit(BSNL connection has this restriction)
Chances are I will get the connection by Monday or Tuesday.
Due to slow connection and also the night factor(net acess only from 10 pm to 6 AM) I have been missing my Kung-Fu classes a lot lately. So having this connection, could save a lot of time and I dont have to miss my dear Kung-Fu classes any more.
So two birds for one stone - I get a cool broadband connection, I get to attend kung-fu classes everyday without sacrificing on the net.
Other news
When I called my brother he informed me that, he would be joining karate classes from tomorrow onwards, and best part is that- he gets to join from where he stopped, namely brown belt. He had been missing the classes especially after coming to Pune and could not find any place for karate classes.
